“A ship,” the lookout high above sang, “two points off our stern.”

“What is she?” Low yelled.

“Small, single mast, gaff rigged,” the lookout yelled back.

“Anything else in sight?”

“She’s alone on the horizon, Ned,” the lookout replied.

Mason meandered his way toward the helm, to within earshot of Low.

Low closed the hatch to his cabin and used it to step up to the fantail, which was only a couple of feet above the main deck.

Thomas followed him up.

“See anything?” Low asked Thomas as the two of them peered over the stern.

“Not from this angle.” He cranked his neck up at the lookout. “Still there?”

“She dropped out of sight a few seconds, but she’s back now,” the lookout said.

“What do you think?” Thomas asked Low.

“Large enough for cargo?” Low yelled up at the lookout.

“Can’t tell, too far to see. Single mast is all I have.”

Low stared at Thomas for several long moments and then turned his attention to the horizon. He then pivoted and stepped down from the fantail. “Keep a sharp eye out up there,” he yelled.

“Aye, Ned.”

Low didn’t know what that ship was, but Mason had a pretty good idea. A small sloop, single mast. Jeremy and Charlie. Keeping their distance. It had to be. Mason felt it. And for the first time, he didn’t feel alone.
